Where has the time gone?

Yes.. Yes.. I know it's been almost a month since I've blog.

Here is a quick update about what all has been going on:

1. Mom is doing okay right now. She had her first chemo treatment on December 3rd. She goes again on Christmas Eve. She got sick on the Saturday following the first treatment. Pray that she doesn't get sick this go around. I would hate for her to be sick on Christmas. We set up a webpage for her through caringbridge. If you would like, you can go to visit it at www.caringbridge.org/visit/monettevinson.

2. School is coming to a close for the year. WOO HOO!!! I'm so excited. The kids are getting excited as well. They have been that way for probably a few weeks now. We have this week left. Tomorrow(Monday) we have a "movie day" after school. This is where parents can leave their kids for a couple of hours and go shopping, clean house, etc. without having to deal with the kids. On Thursday, we have our Christmas musical at school. They have been working hard on it. Friday is a half-day. We have our individual class parties, then we go out and have a gingerbread house making party and celebrate with "Happy Birthday, Jesus" cake. After all the kids have left, the teachers are going to have their staff Christmas party.

3. Christmas and New Year's are fast approaching. Where has this year gone? Good grief! It's been a whirlwind year, that's for sure! I am going to try to be better about blogging this next year. I'm not going to make any promises though. If you are trying to get a hold of me, e-mail me or check me out on facebook. I'm usually on there. :D

Well... I know I most likely will not blog before the New Year starts so...

(singing) "I wish you a Merry Christmas, I wish you a Merry Christmas, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!" Merry Christmas to all my friends. Blessings to you and your family for a happy, healthy 2009! I love you all!

Mom Update

I'm posting another update about my mom. This was in an e-mail that my sister sent to everyone.

Dear Family and Friends,
We wanted to give all of you an update on Mom. First, she is recuperating from the surgery ok. She takes more "Rest Breaks" than she used to and has gone back to work.
Mom saw the oncologist last Friday. She and Dad spent 4 hours there....getting blood work done, seeing the doctor and getting all sorts of information that had their heads swimming when they left.
We were hoping and praying that Mom would only need radiation but she will have to have both chemo and radiation. She will have her first chemo treatment on December 3rd and every 3 weeks after that for 6 treatments. After the chemo treatments she will have radiation.
This next week will be spent seeing a surgeon to insert a port since they will be drawing so much blood and they can't use her right arm. This will also be used to get the chemo into her body. She also has to have a bone scan, liver scan and a lung scan done as well. On Thursday, she will have an echocardigram done on her heart, because one of the drugs she will be getting can do damage to the heart muscle.

Things to pray for specifically:
-That Mom will stay strong through all of her chemo treatments.
-That she will not get sick from her treatments.
-She will most likely loose her hair, pray that this will be easy to deal with, not a burden.
-Dad that he will also stay healthy through all of this.
-The mental aspect of all of this.
-Understanding, everything the doctors tell us.
I know there is more, but this is a start. Please also keep Kimberly and I in your prayers as well. We will keep you posted as the treatments start.

Hope everyone has a wonderful "Thanksgiving Holiday". We need to remember that in the life of a believer, God "works all things together for good" (Romans 8:28) and that includes cancer.

Thank you to those who are continuing to pray for us. Like my sister said, we will try to keep everyone updated throughout this. I hope everyone is doing well.

Have a HAPPY Thanksgiving!

A Quick Update

Just a quick little update to let all of you know what's going on with my Mom.

Mom had her surgery on Thursday morning. It was about a 3 hour surgery. I didn't go back to Dallas because I figured she would need me more when I come home for the holidays. My sister kept me up-to-date with everything. She said that the nurse called them every 30 minutes to 1 hour to let them know of the progress. Now.. how many doctors really do that?!? Anyways... she came through it like a little trooper. My dad said it was kinda funny being on this side of the table. (My dad has had his fair share of surgeries and hospital stays... more than we would like to count!) I called Mom on Friday morning. She said that she had got sick several times and was dizzy. She had a phone call into the doctor but hadn't heard of anything. She sounded very sleepy. I asked her if she was in any pain and she said that she didn't really have a lot. That is a good thing.

I haven't called back to check on her, but I will later on today. I will try to keep you updated on how things are going. Please continue to keep us all in your prayers. We appreciate all of them.

I've been playing Hide and Go Seek but you found me!

Okay... so you're probably beginning to ask yourself, "Where is the world have I been?!?". I haven't blogged in over a month. Shame on me. Well.. it's been a long month, let me tell you.

First it was the hurricane and dealing with all the aftermath of it. Then I had to deal with getting back into the swing of things at school. Who knew that being out of school for almost a week would do that to you?!? Now that I think I have things at school under control, it's time for Parent/Teacher conference and report cards. Good grief! Is it summer yet!?! Just kidding! I could use a little mini break though. Hmm.. Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

Anyways... more importantly, the past week has been kinda rough for my family. My mom, who is 61, just got diagnosed with breast cancer. She is dealing with it well from my standpoint. The way she found out was that she went in for her normal mammogram and the doctors found what they thought to be a cyst. They did a needle biopsy to determine the status of it. It turned out to be cancer. She has to masses. One is 2.4 cm in length and the other is 0.6 cm. She is planned to have a lumpectomy on Thursday, October 30th. That all depends on the pre-op things she needs to have done, which have to be pre-approved by insurance. If all goes according to plan, she will have her surgery then. They are hopeful that they will not have to do any kind of chemo or radiation, but it all depends on what the pathology report says.

I don't know anything else at the moment. Continue to keep my family in your thoughts and prayers. We could use it right now. I'm excited though because I will get to see them this weekend. They are coming down to celebrate my sister's and Lillie's birthdays. It should hopefully be a good time.

Well.. I have some things for school to get finished, so I'll sign off for now. I will try harder to blog more. :D

Electricity is such a WONDERFUL thing!

Do you remember the high school chant we used to do?
"We've got spirit, yes we do. We've got spirit, how 'bout you?"

Well.. this was my chant last night
"We've got power, yes we do. We've got power, how 'bout you?"

We've been without power since about Friday night/Saturday morning. We decided to stay here during the hurricane. We didn't have much damage here. We lost a tree in our backyard as well as some limbs and leaves. We had to clean out our fridge and freezer since we lost power. I guess that was a good thing. I've been needing to do that!

We haven't had school since Thursday. We'll go back this Thursday. I know the kids are probably ready to get back.. yeah right! :D I know I am. I'm tired of just sitting at home watching the same television coverage day and night. I was glad to see some regular programming was on tv last night. I didn't see the Cowboys game though. :(

I've talked to some of my friends who live up north of me in Spring. They still don't have power. They are having to use generators. Pray for them. I know it's probably getting hot and boring up there with no power. Pray for the rest of Houston and especially the Galveston area. If you've watched any of the news, you saw the devestation there is. It's going to take a LONG time to get back to some sort of normalcy.

Well.. I wanted to update you and let you know that I am doing okay. I hope that everyone else is doing okay as well.

"Hunkering" Down

It's either time to start "hunkering" down or leave the homestead and head north. Hurricane Ike is on his way. I'm planning on staying here unless things get bad. Jim's Mom and Sister are here as well. We've got some water, food and batteries.

I have a bag packed and ready to go if they make us go. School is closed tomorrow. Depending on how bad the storm gets, we might not have it on Monday due to down power lines or whatever.

Pray for the people that are staying behind that live right on the coast. Pray for us that there isn't a lot of damage due to wind or tornadoes.

I'll blog once we're in the clear with everything and tell you how things went.

3rd Week and still going!

It's the 3rd week of school. This is actually the first full week that we've been in school. The past 2 weeks we didn't go all week due to just starting or Labor Day. I haven't gained any kids, so my count still stands at 8. Things are going pretty well. I LOVE having a big room. I have a roller chair, so it's easy to roll to one side of the room when I'm working with one grade and then roll over and work with the other grade. It also makes things easier because I'm at their level when I'm writing things on the board.

My kids are pretty good. I have 2 behavior systems in my class. One is where they have their name on a clip and they have to move it through our color chart if they are bad. They start on Green 1 and then move to Green 2, Yellow then Red. Luckily I haven't had anyone get to Red yet. I hope it doesn't start either. The other system is a "gold coin". They can earn these by doing something without being told to, being a good friend and things like that. When you get 10 coins, you can go into the "treasure box". I have been told that I have a pretty neat treasure box. :) I've already had a few get to go there. I hope they continue to be good. I know they can do it.

Other than school, not much is going on. I've just been going to school, coming home and doing a few things around the house and that's about it.

Well.. It's getting close to school being out. Yes.. I am writing at school. No.. my students are not in the room. They are at Art right now, so I had a few minutes. Good grief! Do you think I would write on my blog while school was in session!?! What kind of a teacher do you think I am!?! :)

(Don't answer that last question rhetorically!)
